His music’s complexity and intricacy now became clear. Thelonious Monk, now signed to Riverside Records, started to compose his music for the first time, notably, “Brilliant Corners” in 1956. It was here, where he co-created Bebop, a school of Jazz. He joined the main band at Milton’s Playhouse in Harlem in 1941. In his late teens, Monk began to indulge in Jazz, playing with small, local bands. He joined “Texas Warhorse,” an evangelist, where he played the church organ. Monk’s passion for music led him to drop out of Stuyvesant High School, which he was attending, to instead play the piano. He was eventually banned from ever contesting again, at age 13, because he had won so many weekly competitions. He was at the Apollo Theatre for a series of amateur competitions. This interest eventually led him to pursue a degree in Theoretical Music at the Julliard School of Music. Monk was 6 when he started to play the piano. He started to learn how to play piano by watching his sister practice. When he was 4, his family relocated to Manhattan, in New York City, where he lived for nearly 50 years.įrom an early age, Monk had a strong interest in music. He’s also a natural entertainer who has led concerts ranging from Rubén Blades’s debut with the JLCO to a New Year’s Eve bash at Dizzy’s Club. Hailing from the Bronx, Henriquez is a rare virtuoso in both the jazz and Afro-Cuban traditions, and he has been performing with greats like Tito Puente, Eddie Palmieri, and Celia Cruz since the age of 14. He is a Grammy Award-nominated artist, a talented arranger, and one of the most exciting bandleaders in town. Named “the most important Latin jazz artist in New York City today” and “the heir to the legacy of Tito Puente” by New York Latin Culture, Henriquez is the longtime bassist for the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. With congas and clave providing the groove, any Monk piece becomes danceable. With music direction by JLCO bassist Carlos Henriquez, this first-ever performance includes reinventions of Monk classics such as "Bye-Ya," "Evidence," "Boo Boo’s Birthday," and inspired new works.
